First World Disadvantages?

It seems that, when compared to emerging markets, first world countries are looking at more disadvantages than advantages. Yes these emerging countries can help strengthen the global economy- but it will become increasingly harder for first world nations to stay ahead, due to competing knowledge and resources.

Ive had somewhat of the same train of thought on this. first world nations only see threats when they look at emerging markets and there ability to have sustained growth far greater than our own. Which it makes sense on both fronts to help them because a rising tide raises all ships. but it is also equally as bad because it creates more competition in a globalized market place. I personally am torn but tend to focus more on emerging market growth as a disadvantage for industrialized nations. The biggest question to ask is will current trends and growth rates stay constant?

From what I gather, emerging markets will forever be dependent on developed nations until they can take the lead themselves, but doing that would require some serious change and then what’s the incentive? If a developing country is doing exceptionally well by taking other’s innovations and piggybacking off them, then why change? It would cost capital and what is basically a gamble… just because Brazil is doing well as an emerging market doesn’t mean it might do well as a world leader.
